Director Tanvir Ahmed originally wrote the film Mahatma for Amitabh back in 1988. Amitabh heard the script and agreed but his dates were booked for other films. Tanvir then changed the script to the story of a mafia don and approached Raaj Kumar. He agreed to the film but many problems caused the film to get shelved.
